Old Work 3

Moving into early college. Freshman/Sophomore year. Worst comics ever. Unfortunately still haunt me to this day.

A large comic/painting thing that I threw out after finishing:

Thursday, March 5, 2009

Making The Abyss/ Mome 14

In the most recent Mome (#14) , my story "Making the Abyss" was printed out of order accidentally. The second page printed was supposed to be the last page. That's why it says "end" at the bottom of the second page. This mistake also threw off the corresponding page spreads throughout the story.
Above is the first spread as it should have appeared.
It will be printed correctly in a forthcoming collection.

Old Work 2

This is one of the illustrations I did for The Richmond Times Dispatch "inSync" supplement while in high school. This was a weekly gig.A funny high school photo while I was in Japan. I am the only one smiling. Also the only non-Japanese person.
The cover and a page from a comic I did called "Shippori" senior year of high school. A Xeric grant loser.

More crap tomorrow.

Old Work 1

I did a long interview a while ago, for the Duke University show, that now appears in the most recent Comics Journal. I dug up and scanned a bunch of old work to run alongside the interview.
However when the interview was printed they didn't use any of the images, just "Mome" pages and random things that they had around the office I guess.
So I'm taking some of what I scanned and posting them here, in multiple posts, for a few days.
First up: a very early (first?) comic that my dad wrote and I drew. It's my dad's handwriting on the bottom of the pages and he probably helped me where I wrote words at the beginning. In its entirety!

More crap tomorrow. Moving into more embarassing territory.

Show & Tell: Torture Hospital layout book

For Christmas, Jane made me a book to do all of my layouts for a murder-mystery comic I'm working on in.
It's designed for each page to be a spread of the book. It's awesome.

Chapter Eleven continues on the main page.
Next week's pages will go up Sunday, earlier than usual, because of my France trip.

I finished a new 8-page mini for Angouleme. It's a ditty of Humorama-style gags featuring BodyWorld characters and I'm selling it for a dollar. Color covers are scraps from BodyWorld photocopies (I sometimes paint over computer photocopies so I can work over computer colors.)

Jesse Moynihan's "Forming"

My friend Jesse Moynihan is starting a weekly webcomic, "Forming":
His writing always makes me laugh. Check out the "Future Me" comic in the "other comics" section and also all of the Kime Agine strips.
He has a secret 100+ page hilarious, moving comic book that's yet to be published. The above image is from his Meathaus SOS story.

Side note #1:

I was asked to be on a panel about character designs at the New York Comic-Con. I enthusiastically agreed, but realized later that it overlapped with my France trip. I cancelled, but it looks like I'm still listed on the New York Comic-Con programming. I won't be there. I wish I could. I'd love to hear what people have to say on this subject.
Side note #2:

BodyWorld scheduling will get wonky around my trip. I'm going to post a couple of days early (Sunday) the week of the 25th, and then a day late (Wednesday) the second week in February. I don't know if anyone cares or would notice, but there you have it.

BodyWorld at Pantheon

From this Publisher's Weekly article
http://www.publishersweekly.com/article/CA6588704.html?nid=2789
"Dash Shaw, Pantheon Ink Deal
Pantheon has acquired the next book from Dash Shaw, the 25 year old comics artist that created the impressive new graphic novel Bottomless Belly Button, just published by Fantagraphics. Pantheon has acquired Shaw’s BodyWorld, an unusual comic that Shaw currently publishes online. The comic will stay online until it’s finished. PWCW’s Heidi McDonald profiled the artist in May and he was interviewed by PWCW’s Sunyoung Lee in 2006.
The deal was negotiated by agent Bob Mecoy. The book was acquired by Pantheon editorial director Dan Frank along with editor/designer Chip Kidd, who will both edit the book. Mecoy also said there was “unprecedented” interest in both Bottomless Belly Button and BodyWorld from Hollywood film studios, although no deal has been reached. Pantheon will publish BodyWorld in 2010. In addition, Duke University will mount an exhibition of Shaw’s work from September 25 to October 31 and Shaw will be interviewed at the showing on September 26 by acclaimed comics artist Gary Panter. Mecoy said another exhibition of Shaw’s work is also planned for New York City."

I didn't know it was scheduled for 2010 and then Bob Mecoy sent me this:
"2010 is a date, not necessarily the date. I told Calvin that we'd either be out in fall or winter 2009-2010 (that means between September '09 and April 2010). He simply picked the later date. There's been no discussion of a hard/firm date with Pantheon."
