New Website Up!

There's a new website for the animated movie I'm doing. I wrote about it previously on this blog. This new site is a shared production blog featuring storyboards, animatics, production drawings that wouldn't otherwise be seen, original cartoons, other people's cartoons that we like, some writing, and I'm posting a drawing from my sketchbook every weekday on it too.

Yes, this is where all of my online energy is going to be spent for the foreseeable future. At the end of this month I will probably redirect dashshaw.com to the new site ruinedcast.com to reflect this.

From Here to There

The map of Boney Borough from BodyWorld was selected for the forthcoming book From Here to There: A Curious Collection from the Hand Drawn Map Association edited by Kris Harzinski. It's a great book and I feel honored to have a map in it.

Obedience Poster

This is a silkscreen poster I designed for Stanley Milgram's film Obedience, presented by Light Industry as part of No Soul For Sale at the Tate Modern a couple months ago.
This is a computer mock-up of it, since it's hard to see in a photograph or scan:
It's two colors: a dark gray and a green. From a distance, it looks completely black. As you approach it, you see the image and the two holes at the top... (photos from the Tate Modern)
...and then the green peeking through the gray. (a scan of the print)
A couple sketches from it:

TCAF Featured Guests Paul Pope and Dash Shaw are two of the most exciting creators in comics, mixing their influences and innovations to create groundbreaking work. Now Inkstuds Radio/Podcast host Robin McConnell will moderated a conversation between these two creators about the role that influences play in creating comics. Ranging from traditional comics to film and music and from classical to contemporary works. This also includes a discussion of education, and some key points in creating your own vision in comics. Looking at how to make influences work and finding out where they lead you.

The New Graphic Novelists -- New Creators Transforming the Medium
Sunday May 9th @ 1:45pm-2:45pm, Learning Centre 1 (Library 1st floor)
There is a pantheon of great graphic novelists -- the folks who started thinking about comics as singular, book-bound creations. But that concept has shifted since its conceptualization, and a collection of young creators are pushing the medium in fantastic new ways. Creators Joshua Cotter, Colleen Frakes, Nate Powell, Ryan North, Dash Shaw, and Raina Telgemeier will discuss their experiences producing comics that alternately defy and embrace the term 'graphic novel". Moderated by Eva Volin.

Making The Abyss (MoCCA show)

Making The Abyss
Drawings from BodyWorld, Bottomless Belly Button, animations and comic short stories by Dash Shaw.

Shaw's recent works (BodyWorld, The Unclothed Man, and Bottomless Belly Button) connect an interest with the human body, informed by figure drawing, with humorous character-driven narratives. This show displays his original art for these stories, which are often a combination of traditional crowquill and ink work with gaouche paints, acetate sheets, animation-style backgrounds, colored marker storyboards, and mixed media collages.
