BodyWorld at Pantheon

From this Publisher's Weekly article
http://www.publishersweekly.com/article/CA6588704.html?nid=2789
"Dash Shaw, Pantheon Ink Deal
Pantheon has acquired the next book from Dash Shaw, the 25 year old comics artist that created the impressive new graphic novel Bottomless Belly Button, just published by Fantagraphics. Pantheon has acquired Shaw’s BodyWorld, an unusual comic that Shaw currently publishes online. The comic will stay online until it’s finished. PWCW’s Heidi McDonald profiled the artist in May and he was interviewed by PWCW’s Sunyoung Lee in 2006.
The deal was negotiated by agent Bob Mecoy. The book was acquired by Pantheon editorial director Dan Frank along with editor/designer Chip Kidd, who will both edit the book. Mecoy also said there was “unprecedented” interest in both Bottomless Belly Button and BodyWorld from Hollywood film studios, although no deal has been reached. Pantheon will publish BodyWorld in 2010. In addition, Duke University will mount an exhibition of Shaw’s work from September 25 to October 31 and Shaw will be interviewed at the showing on September 26 by acclaimed comics artist Gary Panter. Mecoy said another exhibition of Shaw’s work is also planned for New York City."

I didn't know it was scheduled for 2010 and then Bob Mecoy sent me this:
"2010 is a date, not necessarily the date. I told Calvin that we'd either be out in fall or winter 2009-2010 (that means between September '09 and April 2010). He simply picked the later date. There's been no discussion of a hard/firm date with Pantheon."

I did a short story a few years ago called "Cartooning Symbolia" (PDF of it here). I got the idea for the story from this book I got while in high school in Nagoya, Japan. The symbols in this book comes from Mort Walker's book, but I didn't know that at the time.

New BodyWorld pages

uploaded to the main site. Next week this stack of pages moves to a "Chapter Three Thus Far" section in the archives and a new stack will begin on the main site.

Frequently Asked Questions:
Q. What's with the numbered squares that appear throughout the story?
A. Those correspond to the map grid, establishing where the scene takes place.

Q. I missed some pages... Where can I go back to read previous entries?
A. In the archives section, the brown square to the left of the comic. You can read it from the beginning by starting at the prelude and clicking the "continue reading..." link at the bottom of each page.

Q. What's a "page?" Why do you say "new BodyWorld pages" when it's a bunch of panels?
A. I draw it as 4-tier (12-panel) pages and I upload 4,5, or 6 new pages every Tuesday, depending on where I think a good stopping point is. Further in the story the panels will get larger, moving to a 3-tier page, but that's not for a while.

Q. How do you color this?
A. Please see my old post on the meathaus blog.

If you have any other questions feel free to e-mail me at dash@dashshaw.com

Ordering links

The Bottomless Belly Button is now available for pre-order on the Fantagraphics website.

The Mome anthology is available on their site too. Issue 11 has a comic by my long-time best bud Conor O'Keefe. This is his first published work. He does gorgeous painted comics.

Meathaus: S.O.S. is finally coming out. Pre-order it and see samples at the Nerdcore website.

The Cold Heat Special I did with Frank Santoro is now available from PictureBox Inc. This won't be widely distributed to comic stores, so you should probably order it off their site if you want a copy.

Inversions Drawing Game

Here is another drawing game I like to play. It is a total waste of time.

These are based on Scott Kim's inversions. As he writes on his website, these are really impractical and you usually have to know what it's supposed to say before you read it.
Short words are easy, like "Jane:"
Longer words are more difficult, like "BodyWorld:"This says "Mome" on the side, rather than upside down:This says "Cold" and then "Heat:"
This is the name of my favorite restaurant:

BodyWorld Sketchbook

I started working on BodyWorld about a year ago. I told Jane about it and she decided to make a beautiful sketchbook for me to do all of my preliminary work in. She embroidered the covers and bound in my favorite paper -the slickest, smoothest paper- plus she made it the same size ratio and page count. What a gal!
I can't post the front because the embroidery gives away plot details.

New BodyWorld pages...

...have been added here.

I'll be stacking this week's and next week's pages below each other, and then it will be moved to a "Chapter One thus far" link in the archives.
I'm trying to avoid the problem of people reading the comic in reverse, something I often (accidentally) do when visiting webcomic sites.
